Junior College vs Polytechnic — Making the Right Call

JC leads to A-Levels and a more academic university path; Polytechnic offers a 3-year diploma with industry exposure. Both have merit — the right choice depends on the student's strengths and career direction.

Six Years That Shape Everything

Singapore primary education runs from Primary 1 to Primary 6. The curriculum covers English, Mathematics, Mother Tongue, and from Primary 3 onwards, Science. Schools follow MOE's syllabus with consistent national standards across all government schools.

The final two years — Primary 5 and 6 — carry the most academic weight, culminating in the PSLE taken at age 12. A child's AL score across four subjects determines secondary school eligibility and is used for posting via the Secondary 1 Posting Exercise.

  • Foundation and Standard tiers available from P5 in English, Maths and Mother Tongue
  • Co-curricular activities (CCAs) begin from Primary 3 in most schools
  • Gifted Education Programme (GEP) entry tested at Primary 3
  • School-based Dyslexia Remediation available for identified students

Four Tracks, One Goal — Finding Your Fit

Secondary school in Singapore is not one-size-fits-all. From 2024, the former Express, Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) streams have been replaced by Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB), allowing students to take subjects at different levels based on their strengths rather than being locked into a single stream.

The O-Level examination taken at the end of Secondary 4 (or 5 for some students) determines access to Junior College, Polytechnic, ITE, or Millennia Institute.

  • Full Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB) implemented from 2024
  • Integrated Programme (IP) schools skip O-Levels, offering direct JC entry
  • Singapore-Cambridge O-Level results released each January
  • ELR2B2 score used for JC posting; aggregate score used for Polytechnic
