Singapore primary education runs from Primary 1 to Primary 6. The curriculum covers English, Mathematics, Mother Tongue, and from Primary 3 onwards, Science. Schools follow MOE's syllabus with consistent national standards across all government schools.
The final two years — Primary 5 and 6 — carry the most academic weight, culminating in the PSLE taken at age 12. A child's AL score across four subjects determines secondary school eligibility and is used for posting via the Secondary 1 Posting Exercise.
Secondary school in Singapore is not one-size-fits-all. From 2024, the former Express, Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) streams have been replaced by Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB), allowing students to take subjects at different levels based on their strengths rather than being locked into a single stream.
